South Tobacco Creek Water Quality

The 73 square kilometer South Tobacco Creek (49°20’N, 98°22’W) watershed in southeastern Manitoba, Canada is a research basin with a multi-year record of in-stream and edge-of-field hydrochemistry data, recorded meteorological history, and a corresponding record of agricultural activities that includes five beneficial management practices, namely retention ponds, small reservoirs, minimum tillage, conversion to forage cropping, and riparian buffer strips. Extending back to 1992 and up to present day, monitoring has continued in South Tobacco Creek. The land use and water quality relationships gleaned from the intensive event-based water discharge, water chemistry, snow surveys, and soil chemistry monitoring programs and coupled detailed field-by-field documentation of the agricultural activities performed by the farmers in the watershed have been and continue to be the subject of much research. The monitoring program was established in the 1990s by the local watershed groups and increased substantially in 2004 with the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Watershed Evaluation and Beneficial Management Practices program and later as part of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative.
