PURPOSE:
This product serves a public facing webpage for the Canadian public to download near real-time data on counts of Atlantic salmon. The data is updated every two weeks where available and is used as an important stakeholder engagement tool.
DESCRIPTION:
Adult Atlantic salmon returning to specific rivers in the Maritime provinces (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia) are captured and counted at monitoring facilities. Salmon are captured using various methods. Counts of salmon at barrier fences, counting fences, fishways, and at dams usually represent the total run size of fish at that point in the river. Counts at trapnets in estuaries represent partial counts to the river. Counts of Atlantic salmon are presented for two size groups:
Salmon: fork length >= 63 cm
Grilse: fork length < 63 cm.
The map of salmon counting sites identifies the locations of counting facilities throughout the region. Data on salmon and grilse counts are available for each location on the map.
A summary table of cumulative data by rivers surveyed can be viewed for salmon and grilse.
