Table 10.1 profiles recent data for these indicators for both the local geographic area (LGA) and Alberta. The LGA indicator value is compared to the Alberta average. As a result of consultations and analysis during the fall of 2016, 12 indicators were identified to help determine the need for new or additional primary health care services across all local geographic areas throughout Alberta. These indicators were related to health service utilization and the health needs of the population. The indicators are standardized by age, where appropriate, to allow comparison of information across local geographic areas and the province. The bullets below present the underlying issues that these indicators will address. Health status indicators help show the burden of disease in the population that could be monitored and/or improved by primary health care services. Utilization indicators determine if there is a gap between population health needs and available health care services and suggests where this gap exists (e.g. use of emergency departments for non-urgent health care).
