HMS Erebus Underwater Archaeological Survey 2017

This research bulletin presents the results of archaeological fieldwork conducted by Parks Canada’s Underwater Archaeology Team at the wreck of HMS Erebus in August-September 2017. The project’s objective was to continue to map the site’s features and artifacts, as well as to document the wreck through remotely operated vehicle surveys, photography and video. The project was greatly shortened as Parks Canada’s research vessel David Thompson and diving and excavation support barge Qiniqtiryuaq could not be deployed to the Arctic. The team therefore operated from a campsite on nearby Hauniqtalik Island, and diving activities were staged from two inflatable boats. Ultimately, three dives were conducted; new artifacts were identified and photographed on the lower deck. Site inspections revealed minimal change to the hull structure since the previous visit in 2016.
