Coastal Forest Productivity - Pukaskwa

Remote sensing techniques are used to monitor forest productivity in the park’s coastal ecodistricts: White River Plains and Coastal Hills. Forest productivity is measured using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Landsat TM imagery (Landsat 5, 7 and 8) choosing dates of peak phenology for each image using MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) instrument aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites. Imagery is manipulated in PCI Geomatics Geomatica. Productivity is assessed biennially using the NDVI and analyzed for a trend in the most recent 20 years of data.
