Detailed results from the Algorithmic Impact Assessment (AIA) for the Remote Reporting program. The AIA is a questionnaire designed to help assess and mitigate the risks associated with deploying an automated decision system. The AIA also helps identify the impact level of the automated decision system under the Directive on Automated Decision-Making.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is committed to using technology responsibly. The Agency developed a Remote Reporting tool consisting of a CBSA-facing technical backend system and a voluntary public-facing mobile device/smartphone app where individuals subject to reporting conditions are able to report remotely to the CBSA by collecting facial biometrics as a form of authenticating the individual’s identity. The app uses automated facial recognition software and geographic data to verify the identity and location of individuals.
CBSA trained staff will review every report made by an individual. This approach ensures that human judgment and discretion are applied to the results, promoting accountability and accuracy in the system's operation.
